Bond Commission Approves $37.5 Million for Housatonic Community College

At a special meeting on Sept. 29, the State Bond Commission approved more than $37.5 million for renovations and additions to Lafayette Hall at Housatonic Community College (HCC) in Bridgeport.

The funding will be used for the renovation of approximately 36,000-square-feet of space in Lafayette Hall, and a 46,000-square-foot addition for new and renovated spaces that include student services, the library and academic support center, media services, science and math space expansions, a new welcome center and general purpose classrooms.

Through this expansion, HCC also plans to boost enrollment, creating a “one stop shopping” experience for existing and prospective students to enroll, register, and complete financial aid forms. The project will also create approximately 627 construction related jobs.

“This funding will play in integral role in expanding our academic programs, attracting new students and strengthening our infrastructure,” said HCC President Paul Broadie. “I thank Governor Malloy and the legislature for their ongoing support of HCC. This funding will create a better student experience, resulting in graduates ready to fulfill the state’s workforce needs of the future.”

The new space will also enable HCC — with its academic emphasis on STEAM (Science-Technology-Engineering-Arts-Math) — to provide new program offerings. These will include advanced web design, industrial design, computer application software development, computer gaming design, smartphone application design, software security and digital animation. The college also plans to add bio-sciences and bio-engineering programs.
